Biography: Marco Crisma earned his degree in chemistry at the University of Padova, Italy in 1980. After postdoctoral research with G.D. Fasman at Brandeis University, MA, USA (1981-1982), and work in industry in the laboratory of the Italian branch of Quaker Chemical Company, Inc. (1983-1984), in 1985 he gained the position of Researcher at the Biopolymer Research Center of CNR in Padova.

He spent short periods as Visiting Scientist at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium (1994), and at the University of Zaragoza, Spain (1999).

Since 2001 he is Senior Researcher at the Padova Unit of the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry of CNR. He is a member of the International Union of Crystallography, the European Peptide Society, and the Italian Association of Crystallography. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Open Organic Chemistry Journal (Bentham), and serves as a referee for a number of journals including Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Chem. Eur. J., ChemComm, Eur. J. Org. Chem., Org. Lett., Biopolymers, Amino Acids. Dr. Crisma has co-authored over 350 publications. His h-index is 44.



  • Conformational properties of non-coded amino acids. Design and 3D-structure of peptide and pseudopeptide foldamers.
  • Molecular scaffolds and supramolecular constructs based on non-coded amino acids, to be exploited as templates and spacers.
  • Peptaibiotics (naturally-occurring antimicrobial peptides, active at the level of cell membranes, containing C-alpha-tetrasubstituted amino acids) and related compounds: synthesis, 3D-structure, mechanism of action.
  • X-ray diffraction crystallography.
